Shattered Dreams That Never Were

Why should I believe in you?

Disappeared in the night, how you flew.

And the glass slipper broke into shards,

Glittering pieces to sparkle as if true.

Why should you believe in me?

I can't take you far away from it all,

And my white horse was really a rat,

And your prince married somebody else ...

Let's dance the night away,

And forget all our chores, just today.

Have a slice of pumpkin pie, have a slice of pumpkin pie,

and go on.

Why should we believe in us?

All our dreams are displayed in the dust.

Just give your fairy godmother a call,

She's shopping for shoes at the mall ...

We danced the night away,

And forgot all our pain, just that day.

Have a slice of pumpkin pie, have a slice of pumpkin pie,

and go on.

Why should I believe in dreams?

They shatter so shamelessly.

Shattered dreams that never were,

Bury the spirit under the dirt.

Why should I believe in Hope?

Hopes sprang lifelike, but from fantasy.

The carriage turned back into squash,

And the horses turned back into mice,

As the sweepers swept up from the Ball.

Why should I believe in me?

All my images turned into dust,

Shiny contraptions turned into rust,

I kick at the dust, I brush off the rust,

But something seems to call out to me.

Why should I believe in .... what?

Something sparkles in a rogue ray of light,

I pick it up - it's just a small pumpkin seed.

I hold on to it, not knowing why.

What can I believe in? A seed?

Perhaps it can grow into something someday,

A pumpkin I can shape into a funny face?

A pumpkin that will never be transformed

into a carriage fit for a Royal Ball.

But the seed can perhaps transform

A cynic into dreamer, again.

In the seed, I see clearly,

The dreaming of dreams,

Dreams that can rise from the dust.

But can I believe in us?

I see again the beauty of your dreams,

And new dreams that never were,

Dreams that never were, but can be.

Let's dance the night away,

And forget all our chores, just today.

Have a slice of pumpkin pie, have a slice of pumpkin pie,

Let's go on.
